Vodafone Foundation DreamLab Launches in Four More Countries

Vodafone Foundation’s DreamLab, which uses the power of networked smartphones to process complex medical research data, is now available in a further four countries.

Users from Ireland, Albania, Greece and the Netherlands can now #JoinTheDreamTeam to help fight cancer and COVID-19 while they sleep.

The recent global rollout of DreamLab, which has been orchestrated by Transpire with support from AWS, has seen the app go live in 15 countries around the world.

From One to 15 Countries – Scaling DreamLab Worldwide

“We knew going into this project that hundreds of thousands of users from around the world could be powering DreamLab 24/7,” said Federico Roma, Software Engineer at Transpire. “Therefore, we needed to make sure that the app’s architecture could scale according to demand yet remain stable and secure at all times.”

This was made easier by the fact that DreamLab is built on the AWS Well-Architected Framework, which provides operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency and cost optimisation.

Even so, Transpire’s engineering team still had obstacles to overcome when it came to making gains in other areas, as Lead Backend Engineer Henry Singleton explains:

“The first challenge was making things more efficient to get research problems out to user devices faster. This meant speeding up the delivery of data and simplifying the app’s infrastructure by reducing the number of moving parts.

“With such a big team contributing to the project, we improved the deployments of the backend in a way that allowed us to develop collaboratively on the same code base, at the same time. This also helped with tight turnaround times for testing a brand-new COVID-19 dataset, which included more varied calculations times than usual.”

Despite huge spikes in activity due to the global rollout and the availability of the Corona-AI project, DreamLab continues to work exactly how it should, scaling automatically to meet demand without any intervention from Transpire’s support team.

#FightBack – Download DreamLab Today

DreamLab is available to download worldwide in Australia, UK, Italy, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Ghana, South Africa, Lesotho, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Netherlands and Albania.

While traditional and even experimental research methods could take years to develop, the mobile cloud-based processing approach of DreamLab drastically reduces the time needed to analyse huge amounts of medical data.

For example, a desktop computer running 24-hours a day would take decades to process the data, but a network of 100,000 smartphones running overnight could do the job in just a couple of months.

Originally developed to speed up the pace of cancer research, a new Corona-AI project launched on DreamLab in April 2020, which uses the same technology to help in the fight against COVID-19.
